Considering Two Wedding Officiants? Here’s What You  Need to Know

As a Portland Wedding Photographer I’ve noticed an increasing number of couples opting for two wedding officiants during their ceremony. Typically, this involves two individuals—often siblings, close friends, or parents—who take turns greeting guests and sharing stories before and after the vows.

Should You Have Two Wedding Officiants During Your Ceremony?

In principle, having two wedding officiants can be a wonderful idea for several reasons. It introduces a dynamic interplay between individuals with unique perspectives, adding a theatrical banter that can enliven storytelling about the couple. Additionally, it offers an opportunity to honor two people who have played a particularly meaningful role in the lives of the couple.

Are There Drawbacks to Having Two Wedding Officiants?

There are some drawbacks to consider, particularly from a photography perspective. As a Portland wedding photographer, I’ve found that having two officiants can sometimes hinder the bride and groom’s connection during portions of the ceremony.

How to Position Two Wedding Officiants in Photos

Ideally, couples should stand close enough to hold hands comfortably across from each other. This arrangement ensures that when photographing the scene, the composition doesn’t appear awkward or distant.

If the bride and groom are spaced too far apart, framing them together becomes challenging, and excessive dead space can create a sense of separation. Being within arm’s reach promotes a tighter composition and a sense of closeness, allowing for intimate moments to be captured—such as holding hands, caressing each other’s faces, or wiping away tears.

Challenges of Having Two Wedding Officiants

When two officiants stand shoulder-to-shoulder between the couple, several issues can arise. If the couple stands within arm’s reach, it may partially block the view of one or both officiants, making it difficult to photograph a well-composed image.

This positioning can also obstruct the view from the guests’ perspective. As a result, the couple might end up standing farther apart to ensure both officiants are clearly visible, which compromises their ability to hold hands and express intimacy.

How a Portland Wedding Photographer Can Help

Even with two wedding officiants, you can still have a stunning ceremony with excellent photography. A skilled Portland wedding photographer can manage the choreography and positioning to ensure everything works seamlessly, capturing every special moment beautifully.

Setting The Right Choreography

For ceremonies lasting 15-20 minutes, I recommend starting with both officiants centered shoulder-to-shoulder while the couple stands apart to allow guests to see both officiants. After about 5 minutes of introductions and storytelling, one officiant can step aside, allowing the couple to move closer together and hold hands.

From there, the officiants can take turns speaking between the couple. This setup ensures that the couple can interact with each other without feeling obstructed, and it helps avoid awkward compositions where an officiant might be partially obscured.

Maximizing Ceremony Coverage

For shorter ceremonies, around 5-10 minutes, it’s advisable for the officiants to take turns from the start. This approach allows the Portland wedding photographer to capture those intimate moments between the couple within the limited timeframe.

Balancing Intimate Moments

Ultimately, having two wedding officiants can enhance the ceremony but introduces certain challenges photographically. With thoughtful choreography, you can overcome these issues and create a ceremony that allows for both dynamic interactions and intimate moments between the couple.
