Clark County Wetlands Adventure Session

In October, I traveled to Las Vegas for a wedding reception, this time actually as a guest, which was a lot of fun because I don’t get to be a guest all that often. The main event was seeing Elton John at Caesar’s Palace. It was amazing. Elton’s still got it! However, I’ve recently made it a business goal to make my best attempt at scheduling a shoot whenever I travel, whether it’s for work or not. I’ve also been wanting to shoot an engagement session at Red Rock Canyon on the outskirts of Las Vegas ever since I visited there several years back, so I set about trying to find a couple. As it turns out, I actually was able to schedule two shoots, one at Red Rock Canyon and the other at Clark County Wetlands Park.

However, things did not exactly go according to plan. The day of the Red Rock Canyon shoot was a rare downpour in the desert and I was weary of potential flash flooding at the canyon. So we unfortunately had to cancel and got drinks at a nearby bar instead. It was a bit of a bummer because I really liked the couple and I was excited to shoot at Red Rock Canyon. But that made me all the more appreciative of Zahara and Tyler for joining me out at Clark County Wetlands Park the day before, especially because I got to explore an oasis in the middle of the desert with a super rad couple.

Technically, Zahara and Tyler are already married with children, so I can’t really call this an engagement session. As I’ve been doing lately when the engagement session term doesn’t apply, I like to call these shoots adventure sessions. I especially like the term adventure sessions for two reasons. First off, I love exploring new locations with couples who appreciate the outdoors, and my job perfectly facilitates that, so calling it an adventure session really sums things up. But more importantly, I don’t think that getting engaged and getting married is the only time couples should consider hiring a professional photographer to document their relationship. I believe that you should celebrate your relationship with your partner as often as possible, whether that’s going on a trip, cuddling up on the couch to watch a movie, or even hiring a professional photographer to document a singular stage of your lives together. So I think using the term adventure session opens the doors to couples who might not have previously considered the option of celebrating their relationship together in this way. At least I hope so! 🙂 — KC
